Preview: San Antonio FC v Real Monarchs SLC
In the first of two consecutive home matches, San Antonio looks to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat last Saturday. The reigning Western Conference Champions, Real Monarchs SLC, are coming to Toyota Field for the first of two games this season. The Monarchs lead the Western Conference with 41 points. San Antonio enters the match in 11th place with 22 points. The teams faced each other twice last season, resulting in a 2-2 draw and a 2-1 San Antonio win.
The Monarchs most recent result was a 2-0 win against Seattle Sounders FC 2. Despite Charlie Adams and Sebastian Velasquez both burying their shots into the bottom left corner, the team only had a 40% shot accuracy rating throughout the game. The vast majority of the Monarch's shots came inside the box. The team attempted 575 passes, well over 100 more than Seattle. Defensively, the Monarchs attempted fourteen tackles, of which 79% were successful. The team also had 11 total clearances and goalkeeper Jake Leeker tallied three saves.
San Antonio's previous game against Orange County was unusually disastrous. Two of the three goals were slotted into the bottom corner on either side of the goal. In the 33rd minute, midfielder Aodhan Quinn stole the ball from San Antonio's Ryan Roushandel just outside the 18-yard box and played it across. Thomas Enevoldsen buried it in the bottom right corner. Thirty minutes later, San Antonio failed to successfully clear a corner and Mats Bjurman capitalized on it. Diego Restrepo was left stranded in the 93rd minute after Greg Cochrane was beaten and it became a 3v1 situation. Michael Seaton added to the scoreboard.
Despite San Antonio's previous game, the two teams are pretty evenly matched on paper. San Antonio had a 30% shooting accuracy rate in its previous game along with a 71% passing accuracy rate. The team only attempted 343 passes. San Antonio's defense was successful in 89% of their attempted 18 tackles. Restrepo had three saves.
