Recap: San Antonio FC's Attack Proves Too Strong for Real Monarchs
In what may have been the most impressive offensive showing of San Antonio FC's young history, the home team defeated Real Monarchs 4-2. The much needed 3 points bumped San Antonio into 10th place for the upcoming week.
Despite the positive result, SAFC is continuing to look forward and improve off of this game. Playoffs are within very close reach for them now so long as the efforts of tonight's match continue to show up through the rest of the season.
"We're not happy where we are. We're happy we've won, but we're looking towards Wednesday night's game - getting prepared for Wednesday, recovering. We go again," Ward commented. He stressed the want, and need, for continued improvement. "We're not happy where we are in the league, but we also know we're a good team."
Omar Gordon forced a deflection off of Monarch's defender Michael Gallagher and scored 32 seconds into the game, setting a club record for the earliest goal scored. That record was previously held by former SAFC midfielder Kris Tyrpak after he scored in the 2nd minute of the 2017 Orange County game. Real Monarchs' Sebastian Velasquez put one back for his team in the 16th minute. He dribbled around two players and just beat Cyprian Hedrick and Diego Restrepo. Gordon would later go on to score in the 27th minute following a deflection off the goalkeeper's gloves.
Defender Darnell King earned a yellow card in the 50th minute. San Antonio scored again in the 56th minute when Mikey Lopez beat goalkeeper Jake Leeker and played a ball across the box for Ever Guzman. Guzman turns to beat his defender and neatly dribbles it into the goal. His beauty of a goal earned him spot #3 on tonight's Sports Center's Top 10.

Velasquez was left wide open and answered with another goal of his own in the 61st minute, sending the ball from the center of the box to the bottom left corner. Jack Blake earned himself a yellow card in the 65th minute. Following a tackle on Gordon in the 65th minute, San Antonio FC earned a free kick a few yards outside the 18 and James Moberg is shown a yellow card. Midfielder Charlie Ward stepped up the occasion and buried it in the top left corner, giving him his first goal for the club.
San Antonio was the dominant team tonight, both on and off the scoreboard. They held a tiny bit more possession and were more successful in duels. However, Real Monarchs won the majority of aerial duels. SAFC's shot accuracy rate went up to 46% and they record an 83% passing accuracy rating. Each team attempted 379 passes and had 5 corners. In addition, San Antonio recorded 18 tackles and 15 clearances. Tonight's Man of the Match was Charlie Ward. Ward scored his first goal for SAFC, made three tackles and two clearances and had a 90.8% pass accuracy rating.
"Now it's a matter of regrouping and getting ready for Wednesday night and making sure we can continue top-level performances," Coach Darren Powell commented.
In their next match, San Antonio faces Colorado Springs at home on Wednesday. Kickoff is at 8 PM CT.
